Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone: What Photos Finds, and What It Misses

iOS finds exact duplicates. It does not find the twelve near-identical shots behind them. The built-in method, where it stops, and the eight cleanups that recover the rest of the space.

iOS has had a duplicate finder since iOS 16, and it works. Photos → Utilities → Duplicates, then merge each set: it keeps the best version, combines the metadata, and sends the rest to Recently Deleted.

Most people open it, see forty photos, free about 300 MB, and conclude their storage problem is somewhere else. It is - and this post is about where.

We make a cleaner ourselves. It’s named at the end, after the parts you can do without it.

Do the built-in pass first

It costs two minutes and it is the only part that is genuinely free of judgement calls.

  1. Photos → Utilities → Duplicates
  2. Select → Merge All, or merge set by set if you’d rather look
  3. Photos → Recently Deleted → Select → Delete All

Step 3 is not optional. iOS holds deleted photos for about 30 days, and your storage number does not move until that album is empty. Skipping it is the reason most cleanups look like they did nothing.

Where the built-in finder stops

Apple’s definition of a duplicate is narrow on purpose: near-exact matches, the same image saved twice. It will not touch a burst of eleven photos of the same view, because those are eleven different files.

That is the gap, and it is most of the library:

  • Similar shots. The ten frames you took to get one good one. All different, all kept.
  • Large videos. One minute of 4K at 60 fps is roughly 400 MB. Photos won’t sort by size.
  • Screen recordings. Usually captured for one conversation and never deleted.
  • Blurry and black frames. Pocket shots, misfires, lens-cap moments.
  • Live Photos. Each carries a paired 3-second video most people never play.
  • Bursts. Every frame kept, when you wanted one.

None of that is junk in the iOS sense. It is your library - which is why the operating system leaves it alone, and why sorting it is the one thing a third-party app can legitimately help with. (Everything a cleaner app claims beyond this is worth reading about first: what cleaner apps can and can’t do.)

The eight cleanups that actually recover space

In rough order of how much they return, on a typical full phone:

CleanupWhy it’s usually the big one
Large videosA dozen 4K clips routinely beat every photo on the phone
Compress videoRe-encode to 720p or 1080p and keep roughly a third of the size
Similar photosKeep the best frame of each set, drop the other nine
Screen recordingsLarge, dated, almost never rewatched
Compress photosQuiet, steady saving across thousands of files
Live Photos → stillsDrops the paired video, keeps the picture
BurstsOne frame per burst instead of forty
Blurry / dark shotsSmall individually, meaningful across years

The order matters more than the tooling. If you spend twenty minutes on duplicate photos and ignore video, you will finish with a phone that is still full.

What Declutta does

Disclosure: Declutta is ours. It does that table, in that order, and nothing outside it.

It groups near-identical shots by day and pre-selects a best frame in each set. It sorts every video by size so the 2 GB one is at the top. It gives screen recordings their own screen, shortlists blurry and dark photos, keeps one frame per burst, and converts Live Photos to stills. It compresses photos and video with the saving shown per file before the re-encode, and preserves date, location and EXIF so your timeline doesn’t collapse to today.

Similar Photos screen in Declutta: 24 selected to remove of 32 found, best shot in each set kept automatically, with groups of four near-identical photos where the first is badged BEST and the rest are ticked
Pre-selected, not auto-deleted. Tap to override any keeper - nothing goes until you confirm.

Everything runs on the device. No account, no upload, works in aeroplane mode, no analytics. Nothing is deleted until you confirm, and what is deleted goes to Recently Deleted like it should. It is free - no ads, no paywall, every screen available to everyone.

What it will not do is clear caches, shrink System Data or speed up your phone, because no iPhone app can. Those live in Settings: clearing cache and System Data.

See the number before you delete anything. Declutta shows exactly how much is recoverable across all eight categories - free, on-device, nothing uploaded.
