Why I built Declutta

When my daughter was born, my iPhone storage started disappearing fast.

Every day meant more photos and more videos. Within months I was getting the message every new parent knows by heart: iPhone Storage Almost Full.

So I went looking for an iPhone storage cleaner that did the few things I actually needed. Most of what I found wanted a subscription before it would show me anything, and none of it was simple. All I wanted was to:

  • Find the duplicate and similar photos I could safely delete
  • Find the biggest videos quietly eating the space
  • Filter my own library by size and by date
  • Decide for myself what actually went

So I built it myself. That is how Declutta started.

These are my family's photos, so privacy was never a feature I bolted on afterwards. Declutta finds the duplicates, compresses the videos and clears the space entirely on your device - nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to create.

What started as a very familiar problem - a new baby and a very full phone - became an app I hope helps other parents, and anyone else who keeps running out of room.

What it does

Six ways it gives space back

Every number the app puts on screen is what that action will actually recover, shown before you commit to it.

Similar photos, grouped

Burst frames and near-identical shots are grouped by the day they were taken. The sharpest one in each set is badged BEST and kept; the rest arrive already selected, so a set of four becomes a single tap.

Large videos first

Your library sorted by what it costs you, biggest file at the top, with the size on every row and a running total of what the current selection would give back.

Compression that keeps the original

Re-encode 4K clips at 1080p or 720p and see the saving per file before starting. A keep-original toggle means you can shrink a copy without giving up the source footage.

Live Photos to stills

A Live Photo stores a short video next to the picture. Converting keeps the still and drops the clip, and the app shows what each conversion saves before you confirm it.

Nothing deleted by surprise

Swipe cleanup moves through one item at a time with Delete, Keep and Undo. Nothing leaves your library until you press the button at the bottom, and the app never cleans up on a schedule.

Filters that keep the job small

Set a minimum file size, sort by largest, smallest, newest or oldest, and narrow to the last 24 hours or the last 7 days - so you can clear last week's video dump without wading through a decade of photos.

There is no sign-up, no analytics SDK, no crash reporting and no advertising identifier, so there is nothing for you to opt out of and nothing on our side to delete. Scanning, grouping and compression all run locally, which is also why the app works on a plane. The privacy policy states this in full, and the terms of use cover the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does Declutta upload my photos or files?

No. All scanning, comparison and analysis happens on your device. The app does not send your photos, videos, files or file names to us or to any third party.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no login and no email address required. The app works immediately after installation.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. Every part of the app runs locally, so it works with no internet connection at all.

What data do you collect about me?

None. We do not collect analytics, usage statistics, crash reports, advertising identifiers or personal information. The full detail is in the app's privacy policy.

Why does the app need access to my photo library?

To find duplicates and large media files it has to be able to read your library. iOS asks for that permission explicitly, and you can grant limited access to selected items or deny it entirely - the rest of the app still works.

Can I recover something I deleted by mistake?

Items removed from your photo library go to the system Recently Deleted album, where iOS keeps them for around 30 days. Other files removed through the app may not be recoverable, so review the preview before confirming.

How do I get help or report a bug?

Email support@codivolabs.com with your device model and iOS version, plus what you were doing when the problem occurred. A person will reply.

How do I delete my data?

There is nothing to delete on our side, because we never receive anything. Removing the app from your device removes its local settings along with it.
